The absolute cornerstone to everything I do as a clinical hypnotherapist is that "We are as we believe ourselves to be". If we believe we can, we probably will. If we believe we can't, we probably won't.

Scientists at the North Carolina State University discovered that pensioners who believe that the elderly should perform poorly on memory tests are more likely to score badly. Those who don't believe the negative stereotyping tend to do much better.

Professor Tom Hess said: "Older adults will perform more poorly on a memory test if they are told older folks do poorly on that particular type of test."

NCSU Memory study

This is a great case of "We are as we believe ourselves to be" in action. How often do our own thoughts become a self-fulfilling prophecy, good or bad? How has our belief system been affected by those around us either praising or disparaging our behaviours and actions?

Could this scientific discovery, which is really just common sense and ancient wisdom, affect other areas of our lives, not just memory? Physical health, mental health, confidence, anxiety? Our ability to learn new things? Our ability to just enjoy life and experience positive thoughts, feelings and behaviours instead of negativity? We are as we believe ourselves to be.

If you would like to discuss how working with me could improve your life in any way please give me a call on 01923 243 500.

Be happy, it really is so much easier than you think!

Dave Sabat.
